Sequential Figure and Ground

The main focus of this project was to create a rhythmic pattern that drew the eye throughout the composition. This was accomplished primarily through the relationship between negative space and the connection between white and black. This can be most prevalently seen with black space always connecting to the next black space, and white space being primarily horizontal. Another focus was on the Gestalt principle of ambiguous figure and ground, this is most prevalent with both letter P’s, and with the relation between H and the last Y. In order to balance the composition, I also focused on making specific numbers towards the beginning and end stable, and readable. This helped simultaneously with the balance of the composition, as well as with the rhythmic pattern.
